A Stronger Self
was commissioned by Selfridges for the plasma screens recently installed throughout the London department store.

Eleven short video sequences were screened continuously for six weeks from 1 February 2003.

Texts explored self-possession, self-knowledge, and the relationship between self and others. Texts were combined with symbols of self including the artist’s fingerprints and iris scans, images of Lord Krishna, Saraswati, lotus flowers, and cake.

The work was made at the end of a significant relationship for the artist, and reflects the then pressing need for strength, independence and self-reliance.

Selfridges was undergoing a creative renaissance at the start of the new millennium under the leadership of Vittorio Radice. The store had hosted store-wide festivals including
Tokyo Life
and
Twenty-three and a half days of Bollywood,
making it an environment where visitors were accustomed to encountering new experiences and ideas.
