Identity Is a Fiction that Helps Us Feel Real to Ourselves (Black)
raises questions about the arbitrariness and mutability of identity.
That is not to deny the importance of heritage, but to provoke the questions: to what extent is identity an unchangeable fact of life? How much of what we regard as our identities is simply made up?
Identity helps us realise a sense of our own selfhood, but does it also artificially divide us, advantage or disadvantage us? Isn’t the deeper truth that there is only one humanity, part of the unity of all life?
