On the 5th May 2021, The Guardian newspaper turned 200 years old. The newspaper was founded in the UK in 1821 to bring to light what other publications ignored or deliberately silenced.

To mark the bicentenary, the artist asked the question, ‘What will the next 200 years of progressivism bring about?’

Firrell’s project notes include the words:

The rest of the working notes are headed the word according to the artist, denoting rather than

appropriates and reframes a Walter Kundzicz image of male model Everett Lee Jackson (aka Cherokee b. 1936) from magazine Volume 1. No. 3 published Winter 1964.

This artwork is a response to contemporary social research that identified a growing acceptance of LGBT+ people but a corresponding reticence to accept gay sex itself.
