Gay Sex Will Be Celebrated (Jocks)
is based on a documentary photograph of the Folsom Street Fair annual celebration of BDSM and leather fetishism.
The fair takes place on the last Sunday of September on Folsom Street between 8th and 13th Streets in San Francisco's South of Market district.
The event started in 1984, and is the world's largest leather and BDSM celebration. It includes games (as pictured), beverage booths and even spanking in return for charitable donations.
The jockstrap is a staple of LGBT+ fetishwear; no doubt because it both exposes and lovingly frames the wearer’s buttocks.
The artwork was created as part of
Guardian 200
marking the 200th anniversary of the UK's Guardian newspaper.
The artist asked ‘What will the next 200 years of progressivism bring about?’. The answer here seems to be that 'kink' will enter the mainstream. Fashion jockstraps are already offered by Versace, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Armani, Gucci and Tom Ford.
