Men sitting with their legs apart, particularly on public transport, came to be regarded as a symbol of the wider domination of public space by men in everything from politics to the arts.
Apologists for manspreading were keen to present anatomical explanations for the posture citing everything from genitalia to skeletal structure.
The authorities in Madrid went so far as to ban man-spreading on public transport in the Spanish capital - a step forward for equality or a blow to freedom, depending on your point of view.
The artwork was created as part of
Guardian 200
marking the 200th anniversary of the UK's Guardian newspaper.
The artist asked ‘What will the next 200 years of progressivism bring about?’.
