4 Tenets for Europe
appeared on billboards simultaneously across 11 European nations in 9 different languages to mark the United Nations International Day of Democracy on 15th September 2023.
The series also marked 25 years of Martin Firrell's creative association with UK media company Clear Channel, and the artist's 60th birthday.
Firrell's work is regularly associated with LGBT+ rights, gender and racial equality, socialism, and the value of things that are different. But it is the qualitative aspect of justice, in the sense of 'fairness', that has stood at the centre of his artistic preoccupations.
The idea that justice itself is beautiful emerged in an interview for a Sky Arts documentary about Firrell’s life and work (
Overthrow the Social Order;
Hyde Hill Productions; director Oliver Guy Watkins, 2018).
