Be Kind to Trees
appeared in Latvian on a landmark digital billboard in downtown Riga Latvia.
The exhortation to be kind to trees is also sound advice when it comes to self-preservation; we live in a complex symbiotic relationship with the plant world around us, or we die.
In the image above, photographed by Ieva Endriksone on 15 September 2023, the UN Day of Democracy, the car dominates the built environment. But look to the left and very large trees, though semi-obscured, are undeniably present and doing their work.
The fourth tenet was informed by the iconic conclusion of Voltaire's French satirical novel
Candide.
Despite witnessing grave misfortunes (including the story of a woman with only one buttock because the threat of starvation had prompted her to eat the other) the text still maintains that 'all's for the best in the the best of all possible worlds'.
'That's all very well,' answered Candide, 'but we must look after our garden.' / 'Cela est bien dit,' repondit Candide, 'mais il faut cultiver notre jardin.'
