In 1605, a French diplomat called François Annibal d'Estrées gave a book of alchemy to Carthusian monks at Vauvert, near Paris. The book contained a recipe for an ‘elixir of long life’. The monks sent it on to the order’s most important monastery, the Grande Chartreuse in the mountains north of Grenoble in south-east France. So the Carthusians came to make Green Chartreuse, a potent liqueur containing 130 different botanicals, which give it its uncanny but entirely natural colour. How does anyone account for, or attempt to quantify, the psychological power of the colour Green Chartreuse? Is its power extraterrestrial, supernatural, metaphysical or all three?’
