by Frances Spalding (Faber & Faber, 1990), inscribed by the author to the artist, 25 September 1991. Firrell had read and been impressed by Frances Spalding's biography and decided to contact her. They agreed to have tea together at the artist's then flat in Queen's Park. Spalding was generous with her time and her insight into the way Smith's prose was constructed to create the effect of unfolding thought.
