The Heroic Vastness of this City,
2010, is an early prototype abandoned by the artist in favour of
Comprendre Quelque Chose Pleinement, C'est Pouvoir N'En Rien Dire (To Understand a Thing Fully Is To Be Able To Say Nothing About It).
The prototype quotes from an earlier series of artist's writings about the significance of large cities like London, Paris, Tokyo and New York. A central idea in these writings is that cities can enlarge or expand the individual.
The artist specified Excoffon's Banco, an inclined titling typeface designed by Roger Excoffon for
Fonderie Olive
in 1951.
The artwork was designed to be reproduced in greyscale and the text is backed by large blocks suggesting tall buildings in an urban cluster.
This prototype was abandoned by the artist in favour of the classicism of Ecoffon's Antique Olive and a text that meditates on the role language plays in understanding.
