(Silkscreen, colour poster, Federal Art Project, US Library of Congress, Joe Donaldson Jr. 22 oct 1941). The Federal Art Project led to the creation of 200,000 separate artworks, some of which remain amongst the most significant pieces of public art in America.
Appropriately enough, given the subject matter of
Union City,
the Federal Art Project’s primary goal was to provide employment for out-of-work artists. The scheme did not distinguish between figurative and abstract works, supporting many significant abstract artists, including Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), long before they were able to derive an income from the sale of their artworks.
