Paula, Michael and Bob,
from the series
Writing,
2004. Electronic tills at Borders Books are re-programmed to add an additional text to the bottom of each till receipt issued. In
Paula, Michael and Bob,
the added text conveys the idea that written culture is uniquely placed to reflect, and bring into awareness, the spirt of the times. Paula Yates came to prominence in the 1980s as co-presenter (with Jools Holland) of the Channel 4 pop music programme
The Tube.
The artist has said that Paula made him aware of the resilience of his own youthfulness, and the unfolding belief that this generation might actually succeed in making the world kinder and fairer.
The
Writing
series is at once modest in ambition, requiring no additional resources for its execution, but at the same time, many thousands of public art texts came into circulation during the project period. Sufficent copies of the texts were distributed to qualify the project for the best-seller lists had it not been a freely distributed work of public art.
